I ,for my troubles, have an extended family that are Christian, and we are not talking the love they neighbor, forgive your mates and do the right thing, of the good old bishop Tutu kind. We are talking, you’re all on the slippery road to hell if you are not, christian, white, protestant, and in some of my family’s case, German, christains.
I, on the other hand, am an Atheist. I was educated at a good christen school. Which was excellent, apart from being christian, chapel was a pain in the ass. I could never understand how some of my mates believed the church dogma and teachings. To me it was all farrier stories just less entertaining then some of the better authors, I was reading a lot of Tolkien at the time. The one thing that did stick in my head from the endless chapel hours was that this god of christendom was a god of love. He loved us so much that he killed himself so that we could be saved from a place of eternal torment that he created but only if we believed in him. Or something like that. It all made no sense. After school I ran around the world a bit and lived and worked in devout muslin and Buddhist countries. All this did was to strengthen my view that religion is nothing other than stories made up by powerful people to control the great unwashed.
I do not have a problem with people who feel that I am wrong. They are more than welcome to carry on their lives under their great delusion. What I object to is having their delusions interrupt my day. I appreciate that today, being good friday, is a special day, where their god started his transformation in to a zombie and that western culture has tuned this “most important christain time” into an orgy of capitalist greed. My chances of not having to deal with easter are non-existent.
I, like so many others, am a member of the great Facebook community. It’s how I stay in contact with all my mates from around the world. Today I have been inundated with Jesus is love and Christ for ever, type of post, from my extended family, which frankly I find offensive. To make a point I posted an Atheist comment on christianity. You would think I had killed someone. The howls from the poor persecuted cross loving members of my family were deafening. I was told I was intolerant, a racist, insensitive and, yes, on the slippery road to hell.
Are christians so insecure in their beliefs that as soon as someone criticises them or their religion they feel a need to go on the attack. I have no compulsion to defend Atheism. If you wish to have an honest debate with me about my belief feel free. If you feel the need to attack my beliefs then go ahead. By all means try and change my view. I do not claim to have all the answers. But please use scientific methods, show me evidence I can measure. Not farrier stories out of a book which has no base in fact. Above all do not assume that because you have bought into a religion I fined offence that I am some how obliged to tolerate your narrow mindedness
