The sudden status of Jackie Selebi?

It is with a certain amount of amazement to notice how the late Jackie Selebi, now that he has passed on, is being praised and accolades from all walks of life being expressed about his conduct while still being alive.

The fact that he was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment of which he only served 229 days due to the fact that he was well connected to the ruling party and its higher knight of the round table in his favour to release him on medical parole, this irrespective of the fact that many other offenders whom are seriously facing terminal ailment within the ambit of many correctional facilities is or will never be considered to be afforded the same kind of treatment that Jackie Selebi was given.

Not forgetting the fact that due to him being found guilty still owes the Treasury R 16m that was expended on legal costs for him. Would that amount now be claimed from his estate we wonder?

He is and was a criminal that was found guilty by one of the Highest Courts in the Country and now accolades are pouring in, and the probability that Jacob Zuma may bestow on him, would be a provincial or something that carries dignity and awards a comrade, with other offenders when dying, many of their families cannot even afford a normal cheap funeral.

He might have been the Police Commissioner at a certain point in time, but he in that capacity should have lead by example, yet despite his handsome salary that he was receiving, supplemented his income through devious and unorthodox action and behaviour.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa clearly states that no person may be discriminated irrespective of religion, sexual orientation and many other classes of choice, yet in this instance, a criminal are being made out to be such a wonderful person, which in the Court Case proved him anything but wonderful, capable and having the capacity to be heading the SAPS, and associating with people like Glen Agliotti to buy him suits and expensive shoes, things that we know, but many other “financial awards” of which we are not conversant with, might never come to the fore now that he has passed on.

If this man is afforded a provincial funeral we have really become the laughing stock, and then all offenders should be enjoying what is good for the grace should be good for the gander.

But being au fait with how the ANC operates it would not be a surprise to see Jackie Selebi being preferentially treated discriminating against many others in similar positions.
