Now that the Oscar Pistorius trial is over maybe we can all get back to work.
Amazing how many people consider themselves absolute experts on the subject. Every one has something to say, everywhere you go. If it was a medical procedure people would shut up, since they know nothing about surgery, but mention Oscar and everyone is an expert, and tells the judge exactly what should or should not happen!
Human nature. This is the same about the state of SA and the absolute negativity I see everywhere I go. From pot holes to Nkandla, everyone is an expert and everyone has a negative to share about this country. How about sharing some of the positives?
Did any one know that South Africa is the only country in the world where a woman can bring rape charges against her husband?
This is amid all the negativity, a huge aspect that the ANC government has brought to the people. In South Africa, a woman is far more protected than in the so called first world nations across the Atlantic. In the US and in the UK if a woman is abused and leaves the domicilium citandi (the home), her husband has the right to have her dragged back with her children if she has any,by law enforcement officers.
In the US if she is abused constantly she has only one right, to appeal for a restraining order and live with it, because as long as no murder has been committed no charges are pressed. If she then kills him, she is the one to go to prison for 25 years. The average sentence for a man killing his wife? Five years. The average sentence for a woman killing her husband? 20 years.
In South Africa a woman who is abused has the right to have the husband incarcerated, no questions asked. He will stand trial and be charged accordingly. She will not be dragged back into an abusive home with her children. The courts will decide.
Similarly, if the husband reneges on his alimony or child support payments, he is held accountable, and criminal charges will be brought if he does not step up. In Europe if child support is a case older than several years it is dropped.
I hear people complaining all day about pot holes in the road, corruption, the legal system, the police....
I had my vehicle stolen some years back, and with a tracking system in place, the tracking company told me the vehicle was irretrievable because "It was not where it was supposed to be", whatever that means, and the weather was too bad in the Transkei, so they stopped searching.
I contacted the police, who then took up the search, and found with computer help from me that the vehicle was in the Transkei. On Christmas day, the police officer in charge declined to go to his office party so that he could drive my husband all the way to Bizana police station to recover the vehicle.
The police was efficient, caring and really on the ball...unlike my tracking company!
So, let's all stop whining and start looking for the positives in this country.
There are so many, but while we pile all the mud in creation on top of the good, how can one expect to catch a glimpse of it.
