City of Tshwane: Matlhari Hansi (End the Mayhem)

An old saying goes: "The day the power of love overtakes the love of power, the world will know peace". In the wake of the recent political unrest in Tshwane, let me point out that it is an embarrassing sight to witness what is currently going on in the capital city of our country. This situation reflects badly on South Africa as a peaceful country and a revered tourism destination.

What makes the situation worse is that this mayhem stems from a political disagreement concerning who should head the city. My question is, in this world where political leaders always emphasise the fact that the aim is not to benefit but to serve, why are we having this unfortunate situation in our shores?

Why are there squabbles and factional battles when unity should be taking centre stage? It hurts so bad to see developmental projects such as shops, streets, clinics and buses being torched by those who claim to be unhappy about certain decisions.

How does the looting of a local spaza shop have anything to do with showing dissatisfaction and anger over a political decision? If there is some sort of unhappiness, why don’t the concerned parties sit down and iron out their differences without having to cause damage to property?

I mean, every household does go through its difficult period arising from certain decisions, but you cannot burn the whole village to express unhappiness over a decision that was taken in your own house. For the sake of peace and stability, I call for sanity to prevail.

Let negotiations reign supreme to avoid a situation where lives are lost and service delivery is compromised due to a group of disgruntled individuals. Let all concerned parties sit down and resolve this issue for the benefit of all citizens. I also urge police to arrest all perpetrators who see an opportunity to commit crime in the name of protest.
