Decolonisation is pertinent

Growing up from a village in Nongoma, Northern part of KwaZulu Natal province I was told that a white person is the most important thing. We were taught that all the things that we see today were made by white people. These indoctrinations escalated until I was old enough to think for myself. My grandfather use to tell me that white are naturally smart and a black person was born to be a worker forever. "The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed," exclaimed Steve Biko.

Our African history is not told at school. Even students are not taught what they are suppose to be taught which develops the positive thinking against black people. With my well disposed predisposition let me try to demonstrate decolonization notion.

Eurocentric education is promoting two factors which are ethnocentrism and racism in the society. Western theories that are imposed on students who are studying towards psychology whereas they are going to be working with African clients is just a way of undermining black excellence. The question is who said black people cannot create their own curriculum? In the African continent we have a very good history which most of our children will never know anything about since it censored. The question is why colonisers tried by all means to censor our history if it was not so important are they hiding something? At school my mathematics teacher taught me that Pythagoras theorem is a Greek invention but only to find that all those were just fabricated stories to make a white man to be viewed as "intelligent" Pythagoras theorem originate in Egypt where science started Greek and Italy people received their education from Egypt. It is very flabbergasting to see that black people are viewed as the cursed nation.

We always have to abandon our own languages so that we can learn English, it is very difficult to master English at some stage especially when you grew up in underprivileged backgrounds. The society says applauds people who are proficient in English but they never applaud people who can well articulate their languages. This is decolonization we are talking about today that in order to eradicate racism issues we must firstly embrace Africanism and Afrocentric education as well. At school they teach students about Germany, France,Britain history but never teach them about our own history.
