Hold it right there ladies! A little self-restraint if you please!!!
Everything is about women! I do realize that you think that this is about you but it is not. This is about the fathers, the Pas, the Dads, uBaba(not Jacob Zuma) and all the fellows out there who are holding their own, going an extra mile if not exceeding the expectations. A little praise for these people with hair in their faces is not by any chance saying that it is in cases where mothers are failing.
If I would ask someone in the streets to name just one song about the fathers, I bet you the answer would not pop as fast as it would have if the question was about songs for the mothers. This is really hurting because anyone who really loves and knows music should be quick and mention; Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross. The song broke charts all over the world, surely everyone should remember it. How about Daddy by Ricardo for those who are South African? The song was a smashing hit in the 1980s and even I knew the lyrics though my English was rather compromised thanks to the Bantu Education in the former Transkei forcing us to learn everything in Xhosa to the extent that they even translated the television shows in Xhosa. Radio 2000, I curse you!
Well my point here is not about music really but the lack of praise for the fathers. We are left in the cold honestly speaking because we even have just one miserable day in the year calendar about us; The Father’s Day while the women have the Mother’s Day, the Women’s day, their birthdays, Christmas day and even Valentine’s Day. Yes, yes, I am not making a mistake by counting the Christmas day and the Valentine’s Day as belonging to the women, they truly are. Think about it for a second, who among men look forward to the Valentine’s and Christmas days? Try not to open your wallet on both of these days and see the consequences you will suffer my friend. They will send you to the dogs.
Some women would argue and say that they appreciate their husbands all the time, but that is not the discussion here. I am talking about the lack of or the very less appreciation the society shows to men, to the fathers, it is very sad. Even holiday vacations are all about women, the mothers; the resturanting, the shopping, the buying of a new house is all about women, Oh my heard is spinning! The great Aretha Franklin unequivocally stated it that; Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves. We are made to do it for them in actual fact.
Is there nothing for us fathers? This is the reason I took the liberty to form this blog; So Says My Dad, to put together the things that we as men and as fathers should do in recapturing our smiles including installing pure happiness in our lives and mostly in our children. I am not talking about cars, cigars and time with the boys. I am talking about happiness of substance. It makes me happy being hands-on in bringing up my daughter, making her happy, doing things, caring for her watching her grow, looking after her when she is sick, sad and crying. This is in hope that she one day sing praises of me as a father; do a painting, write a song, name a company or even dedicating one of her achievements to me as her father. Nothing for mahala hey!
