On the eve of the Local Government Elections, suburbs and cities have been transformed into political marketplaces with politicians falling over each other in trying to persuade you for your crucial vote. Not too long ago the Numbeo Crime Index ranked Pietermaritzburg as the most dangerous city in South Africa and the second most dangerous city in the world. Pietermaritzburg could easily also rank as one of the filthiest cities in our country. This is the here and now and the stark reality is that there is no good story to tell from our city of choice. It’s difficult to avoid the stench if you have the misfortune of walking around in our city centre. Let us not forget that this is the Capital of one of the most populous provinces in South Africa
Recent erratic water supply issues coupled with electricity disruptions has heightened the discontentment amongst suburbanites. Failure in routine maintenance of existing infrastructure as well as timeous contingency measures has resulted in ratepayers being further aggrieved in the ANC led Msunduzi council. I have chosen to put my faith in a party with a proven track record and a leader who is not living in the shadow of a corruption nimbus. The Democratic Alliance has such a track record with a shining example of leadership in Mmusi Maimane . DA-run governments are recognised as among the best in South Africa by national government and a variety of other agencies. We can all be a part of this growing success story by voting for the DA on August 3rd and in turn having more impact at local government council. We can strive towards Pietermaritzburg achieving the long overdue Metro status which Mayoral candidate Mergan Chetty has high up on his list of changes. Undoubtedly, a lot of work must be done in the interim but nothing is impossible if you lend your vote to the fastest growing political party in South Africa.
9 out of the 10 best run municipalities in South Africa are run by the Democratic Alliance. In contrast all of the 10 worst run municipalities are run by the ANC. We need to wake up to the reality that change is possible by making the wisest choice for our city on the 3rd of August. #VoteForChange for a better Maritzburg !
