Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly one of the greatest players of this generation, anybody who denies that is being dishonest. His Real Madrid league stats of 260 goals from 236 games dictate that and will probably not be matched anytime soon.
Over the years, he has almost by himself super headed an otherwize ordinary Portugal lineup. Portugal also would have not qualified for the 2014 world cup had it not been for him. During their two legged playoff against a Zlatan Ibrahamovic led Sweden, he scored all four Portugal goals which saw them qualify for the world cup. Interestingly the second leg which was a classic match ending 3-2 featured Ronaldo scoring a hat rick and Ibrahamovic netting a brace.
Ronaldo's comments about Iceland that they are a country with a "small mentality" and " are not going to do anything at Euro 2016" was definitely unprofessional and immature for a man of his caliber.
It is understandable that Ronaldo must have been frustrated after his countries 0-0 draw to Portugal, however Iceland played with heart and it is a result that they should be proud off.
I fully agree with the sentiment of some of the Iceland players who apparently labelled Ronaldo " an ungracious human being". Defender Kari Arnasan of Iceland even said that reactions like this from Ronaldo are the reason why many people view Lionel Messi is viewed as a better player than him by many.
While a strong debate can be generated over who is a better player between Messi and Ronaldo, there is a strong case to be made that Messi is a stronger overall professional than Ronaldo, he certainly has more humility and as yet has not become sour like this after a result has not gone his way.
Some believe in the philosophy of what goes around comes back around. Maybe that was what happened as Ronaldo missed a penalty against Austria during Portugal's second group game which cost them a valuable three points.
