Solution for Universities amid the protests and fee increases

The purpose of this letter isn't to discuss who's responsibility it is for the mess that exists , its to present a solution , which I believe is workable and will result in a win win situation for all concerned.

Its as simple as this , 1st year is correspondence . No 1st years allowed on campus unless they are writing exams. 2nd year 1st semester , also correspondence . They are not allowed on campus unless they are writing exams.

Full time classes start from your 2nd semester 2nd year. This will result in fee falling by more than 50% . For example , an LLB at UNISA excluding textbooks costs about R15 000 per year. An LLB at a residential university costs about R48 000 per year excluding books .Plus you need to travel and also you need accommodation.

Students who have proved themselves that they can study on their own and pass their exams will start attending classes after 18 months. Students who don't pass will not be allowed on campus.

Most of the violent protesters are 1st years . In this way , you will give them an opportunity to pass and pay far less for their studies. Studying correpondence will build self discipline and also you will learn to teach yourself which is an important life skill.
