The ANC in Mpumalanga has suspended its provincial executive committee (PEC) member on allegations that he was organising a march against Premier David Mabuza’s leadership.
Peter Nyoni was suspended during a PEC meeting yesterday when some of the committee members complained that he was part of the ‘Save Mpumalanga ANC’ group, which has accused Mabuza of being a dictator running a corrupt government and organisation.
Provincial ANC secretary, Lucky Ndinisa, said the PEC received “prima facie” evidence that Nyoni was central to the destabilisation of the ANC and government.
“Prima facie evidence was adduced to the effect that he is organising a march to the provincial office of the ANC under the banner of the so-called Save the ANC Campaign,” said Ndinisa.
The Save Mpumalanga ANC group was formed by disgruntled members last year in attempt to sabotage a provincial general council that took a resolution that Mabuza should be retained for a third term as ANC chairperson in the upcoming October conference.
The group also complained that the Mabuza camp was imposing decisions on branches and that the provincial office snubbed grievances about breach of party policies and procedures. Nyoni declined to comment.
Ndinisa said Nyoni will be served with formal charges within 30 days.
The Save Mpumalanga ANC group, however, believes that Nyoni’s suspension from the ANC was a pre-emptive strike before the provincial conference.
Its leader, Sipho Monareng, said Nyoni did not play a part in organising the march nor was he a member of the group. “I had never heard Nyoni saying he is supporting us,” said Monareng.
