Woman dies of hand-grenade injuries

A WOMAN died on 29 August due to injuries sustained by a hand grenade. According to the police report, Mr and Mrs Mahaose arrived home from a funeral and between 11pm and midnight an argument ensued between them.

“It is alleged the argument was over money that was placed somewhere and could not be found. The husband then threatened his wife with a hand grenade. The wife went to the kitchen to inform her brother-in-law about her husband’s threats. The brother saw the grenade in his brother’s hand, and out of fear, ran out of the kitchen into another room,” Captain Charlene van der Spuy said.

The husband then threw the grenade into the kitchen and closed the sliding door with his wife inside. The grenade exploded and the wife sustained injuries to the right side of her face and on the lower parts of her legs. Her husband fled the scene in his car.

“The wife was subsequently rushed to Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti and declared dead at 2.45am on 30 August. The couple lived in Karridale Road, Doonside,” Van der Spuy said.

“The couple have two boys, aged five and eight. According to our knowledge, both were asleep at the time of the incident,” said Van Der Spuy. “The suspect, a black male, Joel, 44 years old, is an ex-MK Veteran who also resigned from the SANDF. The victim, a black female, Lesego, 33 years old, worked as a clerk at the SANDF at Bluff Military Base,” said Van der Spuy.

According to the explosive experts who attended the scene, the grenade was of South African origin. A second live grenade was found at the scene that did not detonate.

A case of murder and unlawful possession of explosives was opened and is being investigated by Amanzimtoti detectives. The suspect is still at large. - Supplied
