A multipurpose sports facility worth R1,3 million was awarded to the Rosendal Intermediate School in Upington, which was the winner of the 2016 Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge.
The Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge was launched in 2015.
The initiative was continued in 2016, with the primary objective to reinforce the instruction of curriculum oriented physical education and to promote physical activity in all primary schools.
It was a partnership between SuperSport, the Department of Basic Education, Sport and Recreation South Africa, the Physical Education Institute of South Africa and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) South Africa.
The learners of the Rosendal Intermediate School was amongst the 600 000 learners in 651 schools across all provinces who were reached through the initiative.
Attending the handover ceremony on 7 February were several dignitaries, including Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba, the Northern Cape’s MEC of Sport, Arts and Culture, as well as representatives of the Department of Basic Education, the Sports Trust and sponsors Steers and Hitachi.
Mbinqo-Gigaba emphasised the department’s continued commitment to supporting initiatives that promote the physical activity and the development of children.
Graham Abrahams, SuperSport’s regulatory director, highlighted that children are faced with many negative influences.
Vaughn Bishop, head of Let’s Play, pointed out that this is a meaningful way to get schools involved in physical activity. Steers operations manager Arno Muller pledged their support in tackling issues that lead to the development of the youth.
The multi-purpose sport court makes provision for five sporting codes, including soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball and tennis.
“The state-of-the-art multi-purpose sport court facility will ensure that we can continue to enhance our children’s education through sport,” said Anita Mathews, executive director of the sports trust.
“Winning the 2016 Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge was the cherry on top of a very successful year for our learners,” said Ellen Allies, the school principal.
