10 school gang-rape suspects appear in court

Durban - The ten boys accused of gang raping a Lamontville teenager at a school appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The matter was adjourned to Thursday for a decision on their bail application, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said.

The 10 remained in custody. Some members of the group, who are minors, were released into the custody of their parents.

One of the boys involved allegedly took a video of the 15-year-old girl being raped. It found its way onto social media. A teacher saw the video and reported it to the police.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said a case of rape was opened in Lamontville two weeks ago. The accused were aged between 15 and 21.
