Cape Town – Fourteen alleged gang members have been arrested in connection with the death of an 18-year-old Khayelitsha pupil who was attacked last week, Western Cape police said on Monday.
The Kwamfundo Secondary School pupil was attacked and critically wounded during an altercation at 35 Block in Harare on Wednesday, said Captain FC van Wyk.
Eyewitnesses apparently saw a group of youths kick open the door of the deceased teenager's home.
"One of the suspects stabbed the deceased and whilst he tried to escape, he was stoned and beaten with a panga. The deceased was admitted to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries."
During an investigation, 14 people between the ages of 17 and 25 were arrested for their alleged involvement in the assault.
Van Wyk said the group allegedly belonged to the Amavura gang.
"It is alleged that these gang members are... causing conflict at the school and also committing crime within the community," he said.
They were detained at the local police station and would be referred to the senior public prosecutor later on Monday.
