Johannesburg – An Mpumalanga police officer was stabbed to death and another killed in an accident over the weekend.
Sergeant Johny Marshall, 45, was stabbed to death at the Witbank taxi rank at about 08:30 on Sunday morning, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement on Monday.
Marshall was off duty at the time.
Constable Juliet Mahungela, 29, was killed in a head-on collision in Bushbuckridge on Saturday. She was stationed in Ogies.
Their deaths brought to 53 the number of police officers murdered since the beginning of the year.
President Jacob Zuma visited families of slain police officers in Katlehong, on the East Rand, on Monday afternoon.
"You have a situation where the protectors of our citizens are... target number one from the criminals," he said.
Last week Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu said 52 police officers had been killed since January, compared to 47 for the same period last year.
