Minnaar said officers followed a tracker signal to a cemetery at Marlboro off ramp in Alexandra, where a shooting occurred.

"A 28-year-old JMPD officers was shot with a rifle in the chest during the recovery of the trucks; luckily he was wearing a bullet proof vest. He is in a stable condition at Milpark Hospital," Minnaar said.

He said they recovered approximately R60m worth of cellphones.

Earlier, Emer-G-Med spokesperson Max Cohen said the truck driver of one of the trucks was shot in the head during the hijacking. A security officer was also injured in the shooting. Both were in critical condition.

Cohen said paramedics arrived on the scene shortly before 10:00 to find the truck driver and the security officer injured.

He said the trucks were hijacked by a large group of armed men.
