Cape Town – Two men were arrested on Tuesday morning after an apparent illegal perlemoen (abalone) processing facility was uncovered in Gordon's Bay, the Western Cape Hawks said.
The men, aged 23 and 28, were found in the house during a search and seizure operation by the Hawks, the police, and the fisheries department, said Captain Lloyd Ramovha.
More than 26 000 units of dried perlemoen, with an estimated street value of R4.5m, were seized, along with equipment.
"We shall continue to dismantle clandestine laboratories in intensified endeavours to rid our coastal lines of this scourge," said Ramovha.
The men are set to appear in the Strand Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
They face charges of contravening the Marine Living Resources Act.
