Johannesburg - Two people are being treated for the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, at the Mediclinic Bloemfontein, a spokesperson said on Friday.
“There is no reason for panic. It is not a light ailment, but it is not the terror disease that people think it is. There are already much worse flu strains going around," Rynette Oosthuizen said.
"We treat it as a seasonal flu and this season’s flu injection does vaccinate against H1N1."
In June 2009 the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared H1N1 a pandemic. The virus spread worldwide and caused about 17 000 deaths by the start of 2010. On August 10 2010 the WHO declared the H1N1 influenza pandemic over.
