2 fishermen drown at Durban beach

Durban - Two fishermen drowned at Virginia Beach, north of Durban, on Sunday afternoon, private security company Marshall Security said.

The company and Netcare911 were alerted by members of the public at 14:00 on Sunday.

Marshall Security's Kyle van Reenen said a man aged about 35 was spotted in visible distress in the ocean about 1km out at sea from the Virginia Beach pier.

Van Reenen said two of their members acted swiftly in an attempt to save the man's life.

"They managed to retrieve the male who was brought onto the shore and found to be in a state of cardiac arrest," he said.

He said paramedics performed CPR for over 40 minutes, but the man was declared dead on the scene.

The body of a second man, about 25, washed onto the shore. Medics declared him dead on the scene.

The police were investigating.
