2 held for stealing from SABC crew in Durban violence

Durban - Two men were arrested in Durban on Friday for allegedly breaking into an SABC crew car and stealing items, while the crew was filming, police said.

The crew was filming in the Point area of Durban, scenes of clashes with police in a week of xenophobic violence, at the time of the theft.

The thieves took a bag containing three cellphones, a wallet, credit cards and two memory sticks.

The police's Provincial Communications Video Unit was in the area and was told about it and started looking for the men.

Metro police helped search for the thieves, and two people fitting the description given to police were eventually spotted, caught, and questioned.

''They led police to where they sold the stolen goods. All the stolen items were recovered by police,'' said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker.

The two, aged 21 and 23, were arrested and charged with theft out of motor vehicle.

The third person is still at large. They will appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court soon.

In March, SABC contributing editor Vuyo Mvoko was mugged during a live crossing near the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

Four people were arrested.
