Pietermaritzburg - A man was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for the rape of a 6-year-old girl he had lured into a bathroom nearly two years ago.
The girl had been playing with her friends when she was lured away by Sphamandla Shange, 27, who took her to a nearby restroom and raped her.
His sentence was passed in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, looking back on the case and the investigation, said that the girl had initially confided in her mother about the attack.
“The mother of the victim noticed unusual behaviour from her child and when she questioned her, the child told her about her ordeal.
“She was taken to hospital for a medical check-up and it was confirmed that she had been raped,” he said.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the Plessislaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for the excellent work.
“Shange deserves the sentences and we believe that justice was served to the victim,” she said.
