267 teachers fired over past two years - Motshekga

Cape Town - A total of 267 public school teachers have been fired over the past two-and-a-half years, says Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

A further 631 were suspended, and 249 placed on "precautionary suspension", during the same period.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question, tabled on Thursday, she said the figures were for all provinces except KwaZulu-Natal, where such information was not available in time.

The totals include the 2012/13 and 2013/14 financial years, as well as the period from 1 April this year to date.

According to the reply, 242 of the teachers involved in the disciplinary actions were SA Democratic Teachers Union members.

The question was posed by DA MP Gordon Mackay.

During apartheid we had a teachers training college. Teachers were properly qualified- at government expense. In return they were employed for 3 years by the government and paid a salary. That and the nurses training college were a good story. Both colleges and the apprentice system cancelled by the ANC. While those in the ruling party have become extremely rich the people flounder

I envy Angie's job not. If she doesn't act, she's doomed.Doomed if she does. On the other note, Prof.AJ Thembela used to say some country trained their teachers such that they became indismissable. How and who train our educators today? Hm........

Pity your name was not on that list!! You are doing the future leaders of the RSA an injustice!! But then it could also be that you are breeding a generation of unintellectual people, to support the ruling party, since they are not taking action against you!!
