The Western Cape police department confirmed on Tuesday that a "riotous" situation was policed on the corners of Govan Mbeki (formerly Lansdowne) and Eisleben roads in Nyanga.

“The incident followed an operation conducted by Traffic Services where eight taxis were impounded for traffic violations,” Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut told News24.

The situation is still being monitored and no one has been arrested, Traut added.

Public violence case dockets will be registered.

Tyres burnt, roads closed

Golden Arrow confirmed on Tuesday that two of its buses had been set alight.

The incident included numerous reports of stone throwing, with minor injuries reported, the company said in a statement.

“The safety of our passengers and drivers remains our priority and as such we have suspended our services in the area.

“We ask our passengers to please make their way to Borcherd’s Quarry where there is a police presence.”

A large delivery vehicle was also reportedly set alight.

According to the Cape Argus, 24 taxis had been impounded. A journalist was also attacked in the incident.

Western Cape Chief of Traffic Kenny Africa told News24 on Tuesday that Borcherd’s Quarry Road has since been closed due to the incident.

Govan Mbeki road was also closed due to protesters burning tyres on the road.

- An earlier version of this story quoted a Golden Arrow statement saying three buses had been burnt. Golden Arrow later corrected their earlier statement, stating only two buses had been set alight, while the third was stoned.
