3 suspected hijackers held in Soweto

Johannesburg - Three men who were about to hijack a truck transporting cigarettes were arrested in Freedom Park, Soweto on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

"This morning at about 07:00 the police with Gauteng intelligence were following information of men who were about to hijack a cigarette truck," said Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

Police saw the car which matched the description of a car that had been used as a getaway vehicle during previous truck hijackings.

The three men, aged 38, 40, and 54, were all from Alexandra.

They were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.
