Johannesburg - Four men were arrested for possession of contraband cigarettes in Brackenfell, Cape Town, police said on Monday.

Warrant Officer November Filander said police, acting on a tip-off, searched a storeroom in Brackenfell on Sunday.

They found a Toyota truck parked inside the building, and four men off-loading boxes.

"Upon searching the truck, the members discovered a hidden compartment inside the back of the truck, with 135 boxes filled with cartons of cigarettes."

Filander said investigations revealed that the cigarettes were contraband, with an estimated street value of R1m.

The confiscated cigarettes and the truck had been handed to the SA Revenue Service (Sars) for further investigations.

The four would appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, on charges of possession of contraband cigarettes.
