5 hikers stranded on Table Mountain, rescue under way

Cape Town - Mountain rescuers have called in a military helicopter to airlift five hikers stranded on Table Mountain following rock falls on Sunday.

Wilderness Search and Rescue spokesperson Johan Marais said that the use of the Oryx Helicopter had been approved after a team of rescuers had traversed on foot to the five.

“The helicopter is in the process of activating and will be en route within the hour,” he said.

“At this point, we understand that of the five people who were trapped on the mountain, three are injured. Two have been classified as walking wounded while the third is unable to walk but is not in a serious state,” Marais said.

It is understood that the group was trapped in the Blinkwater Ravine this morning.
