Johannesburg - Five people died in road accidents in the Western Cape at the weekend, the provincial transport department said on Monday.
A pedestrian died in Klapmuts, a driver and two passengers were killed in Caledon, and the occupant of a vehicle in Clanwilliam, spokesperson Al-Ameen Kafaar said in a statement.
No further details were provided on the accidents, and attempts to reach Kafaar were unsuccessful.
In the statement, he said roadblocks were held across the province and 3 027 vehicles were stopped.
"A total 1 342 drivers were screened for driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in 18 arrests," he said.
"The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay, at 1.29mg/1000ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24mg/1000ml."
Kafaar said 523 speeding offences were recorded, the highest being 186km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 in Brackenfell.
A total of 274 fines were issued for various traffic
violations.
