East Rand stage collapse: 64 hurt

Johannesburg - At least 64 people were injured when a stage in a community hall in Elandsfontein, near Kempton Park, collapsed on Sunday afternoon, Gauteng paramedics said.

"Netcare 911 and the provincial ambulance services arrived at the scene and found that the stage in the hall collapsed," said Netcare spokesperson Chris Botha.

"The people on the stage fell about 4m into a void area."

People sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. No fatalities were reported.

"After the injured were treated at the scene by medics they were transported to various hospitals in the area for the care that they required," said Botha.

He could not provide any further information.

The cause of the collapse was not known.
