8 names submitted for IEC post

Johannesburg - The names of eight candidates for the post of IEC commissioner have been submitted to the Parliament, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng said on Friday.

"After a careful consideration of the candidates' background and performance in the interviews, the panel agreed unanimously that the following eight names be submitted to the speaker of the national assembly," said Mogoeng - who chaired a panel interviewing candidates for the Electoral Commission SA position - in a statement issued by his office.

The eight candidates are former Bulgarian ambassador Sheila Margaret Camerer, chairperson of the gender committee of the Law Society of SA Hlaleleni Kathleen Dlepu, Rebecca Madipoane Queendy Gungubele, Advocate Salome Ngwanamathiba Khutsoane, part-time commissioner at the SA Human Rights Commission Janet Love, special projects advisor to the president Vuma Glenton Mashinini, Lumko Caesario Mtimde and Maruping Michael Wildebees, who serves as the IEC Northern Cape outreach manager.

A committee - made up of representatives from various political parties in parliament - will now select one candidate from the eight to recommend to President Jacob Zuma.

"It would then be open to the President, in the exercise of his discretion, to appoint that person and proceed to appoint any of the five Commissioners as chairperson of the IEC."

Earlier this week, interviews with 14 shortlisted candidates were conducted in Boksburg by Mogoeng, along with deputy public protector Kevin Malunga, chairperson of the SAHRC Lawrence Mushwana, and chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality, Mfanozelwe Shozi.

The position of an IEC commissioner became vacant when IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula resigned in September.
