90% of power back in Joburg

Johannesburg - Electricity supply has been restored to 90% of the areas in Johannesburg that had power cuts earlier on Tuesday, City Power said.

Repairs had been completed and power was being restored to Robertsham, Moffat View, and Doornfontein, spokesperson Sol Masolo said.

A number of suburbs in the north-east and south of Johannesburg had outages due to a technical fault at a transformer at the Prospect substation near City Deep. This resulted in an unplanned outage around 06:00 on Tuesday.

The substation is one of the three bulk intake stations in the city. It feeds several smaller substations that were affected by the interruption of supply in the north-eastern and southern suburbs of Johannesburg.

These areas included Mulbarton, Mondeor, Ormonde in the south; Jeppe, Troyville, Bertrams, and Ellis Park near the city centre; and Inanda, Melrose, Killarney, Illovo, and Houghton in the north.

In Ekurhuleni, residents of Clayville, Kempton Park, were warned about planned outages over the next two weeks due to maintenance work on mini-substations in the area, the municipality said.

The outages would take place between 08:00 and 16:00, Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Radebe said in a statement.

"The whole of Clayville East will be affected at various times over the course of two weeks."

In Tshwane, Heuweloord and The Reeds had no power after two feeder cables, from the Brakfontein to the Heuweloord substation, were stolen.

"The city technicians are attending to the outage and we envisage to restore power by midnight," Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said in a statement.

He said there had been no reported outages linked to the collapse of the Majuba power station's coal storage silo on Sunday.
