Johannesburg - The ANC and DA have retained their wards in by-elections held in five provinces on Wednesday, the Electoral Commission of SA said.
According to results released on Thursday, the African National Congress retained Ward 10 in Moqhaka (Kroonstad) in the Free State with the election of councillor Mpho Samuel Chakane. The ward became empty after the previous councillor died.
The ruling party also kept Ward 29 in the Steve Tshwete (Middleburg) local authority with Maria Nomgqibelo Mathibela taking the seat, also after the death of the previous councillor.
Ward Four in Magreng (Warrenton) was held by the ANC with the election of Angus Kadea Zalisa, after the last councillor resigned.
The DA's two wards were Ward Five in Emfuleni (Vereeniging), in Gauteng, with Phillipus Nothnagel as the new councillor and Ward Five in Theewaterskloof (Caledon), in the Western Cape, with Cornelius Marthinus Lamprecht taking the seat.
