Durban - A man shot and killed in a hit-style drive-by shooting near Port Shepstone has been identified as a leading ANC figure in the region.
Mlungisi Ngcobo was a member of the party’s Lower South Coast Regional Executive Committee (REC).
According to a statement released by ANC Provincial Secretary Sihle Zikalala, Ngcobo was “one of the trusted and hardworking ANC members”.
“We have lost a revolutionary who was dedicated to the struggle of our people. Whilst we send our sincere condolences to the Ngcobo family and friends, we also want to make it very clear that the ANC has also lost one of its foot soldiers for development,” he said.
“The ANC is very much humbled by the role Ngcobo played as a leader of the ANC from his days in the ANC Youth League, until becoming an REC member of the ANC,” Zikalala said.
Zikalala added that the spirit of Ngcobo would live on and inspire the next generations to work diligently to improve the lives of all people in the society.
“He was a real inspiration to all the young leaders, not only in the Lower South Coast Region, but in the province as a whole. The ANC believes that he had a huge role to play in our struggle for a total emancipation of the people,” he said.
Ngcobo, who was driving a vehicle which belongs to the Hibiscus Coast Municipality, was shot several times from a car which pulled up alongside his.
Pistol and automatic rifle fire riddle the driver’s side of the bakkie, which rolled down a hill and eventually crashed into a roadside barrier.
No arrests have yet been made.
