Bloemfontein - The Cuban Five will receive a hero’s welcome when they arrive at the Bram Fischer Airport in Bloemfontein on Wednesday morning.
The men - Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González - were Cuban intelligence officers who were arrested in September 1998 and later convicted as spies in the US.
Their visit is part of a five-province tour of SA.
Free State Premier Ace Magashule will welcome the Cuban visitors at the ANC headquarters in Bloemfontein, said ANC provincial spokesperson Thabo Meeko.
Other scheduled plans include renaming two government buildings to Fidel Castro and OR Tambo and a visit to Batho in Bloemfontein.
Forty Cuban engineers are already employed in the province and, according to Meeko, Cuban nurses and teachers will follow.
“The details are not finalised yet, but that will happen towards the end of the year,” he told News24.
