Cape Town - The ANC on Friday welcomed the appointment of Gengezi Mgidlana as the new secretary to Parliament.
Mgidlana's appointment was approved by the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces on Thursday night.
"Mr Mgidlana, whose academic qualifications include a law degree, has previously served as secretary to the Gauteng legislature, deputy director general in the office of presidency, and also served for years on Nepad [the New Partnership for Africa's Development]," ANC Chief Whip Stone Sizani said.
"We are confident that the wealth of experience on governance, legislative, and legal matters he brings to this position will enhance this institution's fulfilment of its constitutional functions."
Mgidlana was appointed on a five-year contract and would start work on 1 December.
The position of secretary to Parliament became vacant when Michael Coetzee died in June.
The secretary to Parliament is the legislature's top
administrator and accounting officer.
