ANC wins Free State ward, DA wins Gauteng ward

Johannesburg - The ANC and the DA won one ward each in the municipal by-elections held on Wednesday, according to results released by the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC).

African National Congress candidate Bereng Mokoena scooped Ward 9 in Dihlabeng in the Free State, while Democratic Alliance candidate Basil Mark Douglas took Ward 68 in Johannesburg.

Mokoena won by nine extra votes with a total of 675 votes, while DA member Barend Venter scooped 666 votes. A total of 1476 votes had been cast in Ward 9.

In Johannesburg, Douglas scooped 3703 votes, defeating ANC rival Anthony Peter Francis with 3315 votes. Independent candidate Patrick Jafta secured 87 votes, while African Independent Congress member Wenderline Alicia Manuel took last place with 42 votes.

A total of 7270 votes had been cast in Ward 68.
