Johannesburg - Chris Ngcobo, the former Acting Head of Crime Intelligence, has resigned from his position after on special leave since October 2013, the SA Police Service said on Saturday.
"His resignation brings to an end the relationship Ngcobo had with the SAPS," spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.
"... we have no intention of commenting further on this matter suffice to say that we have members without a matric certificate but it is a problem when members claim to have such qualifications when in fact they do not."
Ngcobo was placed on special leave after discrepancies were discovered in his qualifications, specifically with his matric qualifications.
This discovery was made during the department's vetting process, Naidoo said.
Ngcobo was appointed to the crime intelligence unit in June 2012 after Richard Mdluli was suspended amid charges of fraud and corruption, and charges relating to the murder of his ex-lover's husband.
At the time, National Commissioner Riah Phiyega said Ncgobo's appointment was aimed at bringing stability to the police intelligence environment.
The SA police service said Ncgobo's grasp of management values and undercover experience, would help to "to restore the reputation of crime intelligence activities".
In October 2013, Phiyega described the discovery of the discrepancies as a huge disappointment.
She then placed him on special leave and instructed that criminal investigations and disciplinary action against him be initiated.
Naidoo said it would be futile to continue pursuing departmental proceedings against Ngcobo.
"The criminal investigation, however, will still continue," he said.
