Johannesburg - The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) will investigate the cause of the accident in which two boys were killed when concrete pipes rolled over them in Braamfischerville, Soweto on Tuesday, the agency said.
"The JRA will investigate the cause of the accident and ensure that all necessary parties are consulted and involved, including the SAPS and the department of labour, to conclude all necessary processes," said managing director Skhumbuzo Macozoma.
The boys, aged between 7 and 10, were killed when concrete pipes rolled over them at a construction site in Braamfischerville.
The Johannesburg emergency services said the boys were playing around the construction site when the accident happened. They were confirmed dead at the scene.
Macozoma said a contractor appointed by the agency was installing an underground stormwater drainage system in the area.
"JRA will engage the contractor that is responsible for implementation of the project to ensure that they are available to provide any support that may be necessary at this time.
"We want to reassure the community that the JRA will provide necessary support to the affected families and ensure that where negligence is found, the responsible parties are held to account."
He said the agency was deeply saddened by this accident and loss of life in a project that was intended to improve the lives of the community of Braamfischerville.
"We offer our sincerest condolences to the families and the community for this shocking loss of the two young lives."
