Durban - A man accused of causing a fatal accident and then fleeing the scene in a stolen ambulance was remanded in custody after appearing in the Durban magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
Sibusiso Ntlanga, 38, has been charged with the theft of a motor vehicle, as well as culpable homicide for his role in the bizarre string of events that played out on Saturday night.
A heavy goods truck which was driven, allegedly by Ntlanga, ploughed through an accident scene on the M7 near Sarnia.
A tow-truck driver, who had been standing at the roadside, was hit by the truck and was killed.
In the aftermath of the secondary crash, Ntlanga is alleged to have commandeered the ambulance while medics frantically attended to the tow trucker who later succumbed to his injuries.
Ntlanga was pursued, but later crashed into a popular curry restaurant in Umbilo as he fled.
He was slightly injured and was attended to by medics before he was arrested and detained over the weekend.
Ntlanga will return to court on August 4 for bail consideration.
