Another Pinetown taxi boss gunned down in his driveway

Durban – Another taxi boss has been killed in KwaNdengezi, Pinetown.

At least 28 spent cartridges were recovered at the scene where Sipho Mbuzeleni Mchunu, 50, was gunned down, according to his family.

Mchunu’s son Philani told News24 on Tuesday that the former KwaNdengezi Taxi Association treasurer was killed on Thursday last week as he entered the driveway of his Tom Tom Road home near Vukuzakhe Supermarket.

In May, another taxi boss, Mabhunu Xaba, 55, from the same taxi association was shot nine times just minutes before entering his home.

Philani said, “I received a call around 06:45 from my father’s colleague informing me that my father was hurt and I must come home. When I got home, there were police all over the place.”

He arrived home to see his father’s bullet-riddled body lying on the ground, near his gold Mercedes-Benz which was parked outside their home.

“We think that they first shot the car because we saw about 6 holes in the car. I think my father got out of the car and tried to get away and someone must have come from behind because there were many holes on his back. They recovered about 28 spent bullet cartridges on the scene,” said Philani.

He said the family was shocked at the brutality, because they believed his father had no enemies.

“We don’t know who did this because the taxi violence in KwaNdengezi subsided a long time ago.”

The taxi owner, who was unmarried, had 12 children.

“He loved people and was liked in the community because he was always there to help others in need,” said Philani.

Mchunu will be buried on Sunday.

Police confirmed the incident.

“A case of murder was transferred to the Provincial Task Team for investigation. No arrest has been made at this stage,” said police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane.
