Armed gang on the loose after blowing up ATM

Cape Town - An armed gang is on the loose after robbing a shop and blowing up an ATM in Somerset West, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

The seven gang members targeted a shop in Abelia Street, Heldervue around 07:00 on Saturday, said police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana.

They took an undisclosed amount of money from the shop tills. They also blew up an ATM inside the shop and took money from the machine before fleeing.

They were driving in two VW GTI Golfs, one silver and one green.

According to the Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page, the shop was the Heldervue Spar.

“Neighbourhood Watch is relieved to report that nobody was injured physically, but the victims are traumatised,” it said on its page.

Kinana said they were investigating a case of business robbery and that no arrests had yet been made.
