Metrobus spokesperson Esther Dryer said a group of six armed men jumped onto the bus when it stopped on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Ontdekkers roads to pick up a passenger just before 06:00.

"The men started shooting randomly, possibly to scare the passengers and the bus driver intervened."

The bus driver, in his 50s, was shot in the abdomen and taken to Flora Clinic.

A passenger was also injured and taken to the clinic.

Dryer said she was not sure if the passenger was shot or just grazed by a bullet.

Earlier, paramedics said the driver of the bus explained that an unknown number of suspects entered the bus as he stopped near the Mollie Road bus stop and opened fire into the bus.

The bus had several passengers on board at the time.
