Port Elizabeth – One man has been arrested in what police are describing as the biggest perlemoen bust in Port Elizabeth so far this year.
About a ton of perlemoen, fridges and vehicles - with a combined value of R2m - were seized.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Alwin Lebans said members of the Perlemoen Task Team, together with the K9 dog unit and police from the Kabega Park police station, had raided a house in Westering on Tuesday during the early hours.
Lebans said police had a warrant to search the premises, and seized 7 570 units of perlemoen, weighing just over one ton.
"Police found seven bags of perlemoen in one of the outside buildings, a fridge full in the garage and an additional three fridges full inside the house,” he said.
Lebans said the seized goods, which included the fridges and vehicles, had a combined value of at least R2m.
He said police had arrested a 36-year-old man. He was charged with illegal possession of perlemoen and is expected to appear in court soon.
