Auditors to probe prisons tender

Johannesburg - An auditing firm has been appointed to do a forensic investigation of a tender awarded by correctional services, the department announced on Tuesday.

The probe involves a recently-awarded contract for electronic monitoring, spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said in a statement.

"The appointment of KPMG is one of the steps taken to implement justice and correctional services minister, Advocate Michael Masutha's commitment to ensure good and clean governance in correctional services."

KPMG's investigation, which began on Monday, would determine whether the bidding process had been interfered with.

"The leadership of the department... will decide on an appropriate course of action on the matter after studying the KPMG report," Wolela said.

Acting national correctional services commissioner Zach Modise said the roll-out of the electronic monitoring programme would continue as scheduled in the meantime.

He urged all correctional services officials to co-operate with KPMG's investigation so it could be finished as soon as possible.

Modise made the announcement at a three-day national management committee meeting in the Magaliesberg, Gauteng, which ends on Wednesday.
