Baby found dumped next to school field

Cape Town - A baby is being kept in hospital for mandatory observation after she was found dumped next to a school field in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The infant, estimated to be between two and four-months-old, was found by a passer-by lying on a blanket on a trail used as a shortcut in Woodlands, Mitchell's Plain.

In a statement, police confirmed the baby was taken to Lentegeur District Hospital for a medical examination.

A police source told News24 the little girl seemed healthy and well taken care of.

“The baby doesn’t appear to be neglected. The site where she was left is also regularly used [by pedestrians], which indicates the person wanted her to be found quickly,” the officer said.

A bag of clothes had also been placed next to the infant.

Police are investigating a case of child abandonment and urge anyone who may know the baby's family to phone Detective Warrant Officer Nicholas du Plessis on 079 890 6862.
