Cape Town - The body of a second 7-year-old boy who drowned on Thursday was found in Nature's Valley Beach near Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
The NSRI was notified of the boy at around 11:30am. Efforts to resuscitate him were exhausted and he was declared dead on the scene, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.
"The body of the child has been handed into the care of the forensic pathology services and police have opened an inquest docket."
Another 7-year-old drowns
In a separate incident, another 7-year-old boy drowned in the Boknes Lagoon, outside Port Alfred, in the Eastern Cape on Thursday at around 10:10.
In Sedgefield, on the Garden Route, a 17-year-old teenager went missing after being swept out to sea with two of his friends at around 15:10.
"On arrival on-scene two teenagers were found safe on the beach and not injured after managing to get out of the surf safely but a 17-year-old local male remains missing and despite an extensive search no sign of the teenager has been found," Lambinon said.
A search for the teen would continue.
Other incidents
A man believed to be in his 30s apparently disappeared under water while swimming at Milnerton Beach at around 16:00, according to an eyewitness.
"Despite an extensive search no sign of the man has been found and a police dive unit will take over the search," Lambinon said.
No family had come forward to claim that a man fitting the description had gone missing yet.
In KwaZulu-Natal, another 17-year-old believed to have drowned at a beach in Mtwalumi on the Natal south coast was still missing, paramedics said.
Police and paramedics were alerted of the incident at around 13:40, Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.
According to reports the teenager was swimming when he got trapped in a current and disappeared under the water.
"An extensive search was carried out but rescuers were unable to locate the swimmer," Botha said.
