Johannesburg - A boy drowned and another was rescued at Eastern Beach in East London on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.
Two children got into trouble while swimming, said Captain Stephen Marais.
Members of the public managed to rescue a boy, 13, but reported that there was another person still in the water.
After air, fire and rescue services arrived, the boy, believed to be about eight years old, was found in the shallow water.
He was already dead.
An inquest had been opened to investigate the incident.
