Brazen Durban mugging caught on CCTV

Rumana Akoob, The Witness

Durban - The early morning robbery of a woman on a Glenwood street was captured on her employers’ CCTV camera.

Patrick Mooney, who submitted the footage to East Coast Radio, said a man in a hoodie pulled out a gun from his blue pants, pointed it at his domestic worker and demanded her bag. When she resisted he began to assault her.

Mooney said his employee of five years did not want to disclose her identity.

The incident took place at 06:20 last Wednesday on Lamont Road as the woman approached Mooney’s house.

Mooney said he heard her scream, but when he got out onto the road the suspect had already fled.

“We drove around and looked for him but later that day her bag was found in Pigeon Valley.”

Mooney said his employee is still traumatised.

Mooney, a 20-year-veteran of the SAPS who is now in the security industry, said he has had to secure his home with an electric fence and CCTV after he had been the victim of theft on several occasions.

“I’ve got all security features one could have and you’re still not safe,” he said.

“Judging from the word on the street and what I have observed, there has been an increase in crime throughout Durban, not just the Glenwood area,” said Mooney.

The Umbilo Community Police Forum chairperson Ben Madokwe said that over the past few months there had been a rise in crime in the area. “This ranges from hijackings to muggings.”
