Brazen daytime ATM bombing in KZN

Durban - Police are probing a brazen daytime ATM bombing which saw a gang of men destroying an Amanzimtoti cash machine in broad daylight on Sunday.

It is understood the Capitec ATM, which stands near the coastal town’s taxi rank, was obliterated by industrial grade explosives.

A police source with knowledge of the investigation, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said officers were looking at various elements of the incident which may be similar to other ATM bombings.

“We are seeing whether this incident – or rather the group responsible for it can be linked to other incidents. We believe they hit the ATM close to the end of the month when it was more likely to have a large sum of money inside it,” he said.

The source was unable to confirm how much, if any cash was taken during the raid.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane could also not be drawn to comment on this, saying only the gang of men were successful in blowing “open” the ATM.

“We can confirm Amanzimtoti Police Station is investigating a case of burglary at a business premises. It is alleged a bank was broken into and an ATM blown open. No arrests have been made at this stage,” he said.
