Buses operating in Mamelodi

Pretoria - Buses are operating in Mamelodi ahead of a meeting between the Gauteng government, transport stakeholders, community organisations and Mamelodi residents on Sunday.

The buses are still under police escort as the township recovers from a volatile week which saw at least seven Autopax buses damaged and a Putco bus shot at. 

The meeting will be addressed by Premier David Makhura who will be accompanied by City of Tshwane Executive Mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa and members of the executive council. 

The meeting is a follow up to the one held with stakeholders on Friday to resolve the violence and disruptions of operations by Autopax bus services in the area.

Government has expressed concern over the violence and has committed itself to protecting the rights of consumers to use the transport mode of their choice based on price, safety and reliability. 

Preparations are under way at the Stanza Bopape Sports Complex where the meeting will take place. At least 10 000 people were expected to attend.

Police said they don't expect violence but they are ready for anything. Spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said they would remain in the area until the situation improved.
