CCTV footage of murder accused shown in court

Pietermaritzburg - CCTV footage of murder-accused Brian Treasurer near the scene where Dr Bhavish Sewram was shot dead was shown in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday.

In the June 2013 clip, Treasurer is seen parking his car near the scene, walking a distance, then hurrying back to his car and driving off.

Treasurer's arrival and departure roughly corresponds with the time of the murder.

Sewram, from Pietermaritzburg, was murdered near his surgery in 2013.

The state alleges that Treasurer provided hitman Sabelo Dlamini with the pistol he used to shoot Sewram outside his surgery, and that Treasurer and his co-accused, Mfaniseni Nxumalo, drove Dlamini to the murder scene.

Dlamini was convicted in 2014 and is serving 25 years for Sewram's murder. He is expected to testify for the State.

Treasurer has admitted that the video clip depicts him, but claims that he went there for another reason.

Durban K9 unit Detective Sergeant Pedro Rodriques told the court that after midnight, he and others went to Nxumalo's home, kicked in the door and grabbed the pistol he was holding.

The court heard earlier that three spent cartridges were recovered next to Sewram's body.

Rodrigues said six live rounds were found in the pistol he seized.

He said the serial number of the pistol had been erased. The charge relating to the pistol is the unlawful possession of a semi-automatic firearm.

Nxumalo, 34, and Treasurer, 53, have pleaded not guilty to all charges, including murder.

This hearing parallels the trial of Pietermaritzburg businessman Rajivee Soni who is also charged with Sewram's murder. The State alleges that Soni wanted Sewram killed because he suspected him of having an affair with his wife. Soni's trial will resume in November.

The present trial will continue on Monday.
